It’s impossible to deny the incredible growth of the internet of things — or the IoT. From thermostats and doorbells to smartwatches and wearables that can measure your heart rate or some other yet-to-be-developed application, the IoT device market is poised to reach $1.1 trillion by 2026, up from $190 billion in 2018.
On the topic of growth, it’s difficult to overlook the incredible expansion of the Raleigh-Durham area as one of the country’s burgeoning tech sectors. Findings from a recent CompTIA report reveal that North Carolina’s capital city is the No. 2 “Tech Town” in the U.S. for high-tech workers, and Durham-Chapel Hill comes in at number 13. Anchored by the three major research universities of North Carolina State University, Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Research Triangle attracts technology companies from across the country.
In Research Triangle Park alone, over 330 different tech-focused organizations across industries and more than 55,000 innovators come together in the largest research park in the United States to create a thriving business environment, promote economic development and facilitate strategic partnerships that benefit the state and the surrounding region.

RIoT — a Connected Community
As an engineering firm that has successfully helped bring dozens of IoT products to market, establishing a presence in the technology hotbed of the area’s Research Triangle makes good business sense. That is why we are extremely proud to sponsor RIoT, the rapidly growing IoT grassroots organization (formerly known as NC RIoT) that combines academia, government and industry to drive the IoT space into the future.
Offering sponsorship opportunities, events and exhibits, an educational series, a hardware, wireless and software prototyping lab and accelerator program, RIoT is an IoT networking hub with more than 7,000 members whose mission is to “lead our community in capturing IoT opportunities locally, nationally and globally.”
As a growing network of technologists, engineers, business leaders, academics, policymakers and entrepreneurs — all of whom have a stake in the IoT industry — the organization is now reaching well beyond North Carolina, with a growing presence in Charlotte, the Atlanta area, in Virginia and spreading throughout the southeast U.S.
Joining this flourishing organization allows us to exhibit at their demo days, developer days and other events throughout the year, host a lunch-and-learn and leverage the organization’s prototyping lab, expanding Cardinal Peak’s footprint into an area of the country with a bustling technology scene.
IoT Transition
The technology industry as a whole is witnessing an enormous transition from local or static products to devices increasingly connected on the cloud. However, despite the field being full of innovative startups, investments from tech heavyweights and research in medical, industry and consumer applications, far too many companies struggle to understand how to quickly design products that seamlessly integrate with mobile applications and cloud systems.
That’s where we come in.
IoT systems are inherently complex systems. They require detailed knowledge of communications protocols, security standards, data collection and analytics. Plus, many IoT applications are high volume. As such, designing to minimize both the device BOM and the long-term cloud costs is crucial to a product’s success. We understand those requirements and possess the skills and experience necessary to develop connected devices that will thrive in the increasingly networked ecosystems of today.
Our strength lies in speed to market. By tapping our experience, companies don’t have to build out an entire engineering team, staff up, spend $1 million in overhead and more to turn their concept into a finished manufactured product. From design and engineering to development and ongoing support, we have every angle covered.
Only a few product engineering firms are part of RiOT — we are one of just a small handful of such companies participating in the exchange of ideas and technologies to create new opportunities for the entire IoT space. And we are thrilled to be a resource for this thriving community of RiOTers.
If you’re in the area, come say hello at RIoT Developer Day 2020 Friday, March 27 at Wake Tech Community College’s RTP Campus and discover how we solve the most complex problems and collaborate with clients to conceive, develop, launch and support innovative best-in-class creations that reduce the risks naturally associated with IoT device development.
